BSIA 21CN Risk Calculator

This risk calculator may be used to evaluate whether an installed digital communicator will continue to operate when the UK telephone network changes from PSTN technology to IP as part of the 21CN Network upgrade.

By taking the known round trip delay (RTD) time at which a digi is known to fail and the delay time of the receiver installed at the ARC, the calculator works out the maximum tolerable network RTD before this digi and receiver combination will fail.

The resulting simple graph can be used to assess if this digi/receiver combination is likely to fail for different legacy and 21CN Next Generation Network (NGN) routing.

Digi Max RTD before failure
ms (This figure can be obtained from the digi manufacturer's data or from the "switched on" website for tested products.)

Receiver delay
ms (This delay figure can be obtained from either the receiver manufacturer's data or may be available from the alarm receiving centre that the product is signalling to.)

Max Tolerable Network RTD before digi failure

ms (This figure should be used in the resulting graph to assist in assessing the likely risk of product failure with varying 21CN configurations.)

Whilst every effort has been made to ensure that the calculator provides full and reliable results, the BSIA cannot accept any liability for its accuracy. The tests, which gave rise to the results were dependent upon British Telecoms technical equipment and were carried out by each contributing manufacturer themselves. The results of the Receiver delays are dependant upon the Receiver manufacturers data available at the time.
