Tuesday 4 March, 2008BSIA members lead the way on grade 3 contactsMembers of the British Security Industry Association are leading the way in resolving issues with regard to grade 3 contacts for intruder alarms. Following talks between BSIA intruder alarm installers and manufacturers, a number of changes have been agreed which will ease engineers' concerns about the installation of grade 3 contacts.
BSIA Technical and Membership Services Director, Alex Carmichael, comments: "In recent months, a number of worries have been raised by installers as to the range and type of contacts available, the operating tolerance of contacts and the varying colour-coding for flying leads, amongst other issues. It was felt that these concerns were leading to limited take up for grade 3 contacts amongst installers."
"The talks between BSIA installers and manufacturers have resolved these issues and BSIA manufacturers have committed to making a number of changes within the next six months. These pledges should go a long way to ensuring that installing grade 3 contacts is simpler for engineers and consequently, the take up of grade 3 contacts will increase."
BSIA manufacturers have made the following commitments:
- To establish and institute a common colour-code for contacts and resistor values.
- To look at increasing the operating tolerance of contacts to at least 15-20mm.
- To introduce additional flush contacts.
- To increase the range of types of contacts.
- To provide clear installation instructions.
- To assist in providing a structured training programme for installers.
