Marking tackles acquisitive crime
A BSIA member worked with Richmond Upon Thames Community Safety Partnership to reduce the amount of acquisitive crime to the area.
Despite having relatively low overall crime figures, Richmond upon Thames suffered high levels of acquisitive crime with approximately 70% of burglaries and thefts being committed by criminals living outside of the borough looking for rich pickings and the BSIA member was brought in to tackle domestic burglary, repeat victimisation and theft of bicycles.
Residents in the area were provided with forensic marking kits and bike register kits for the bicycles. Forensic marking is based on the same principle as human DNA and deters thieves as it contains a code which is unique and can link a thief to a crime scene, therefore providing vital evidence in court.
"The BSIA member provided us with an instant target hardening solution to help tackle concerning burglary and theft rates in Richmond upon Thames", said Kevin Fletcher-Biles, Community Safety Coordinator for Richmond Safer Communities. The marking of property was supported by street signage and posters to help deter criminals.
UV lamps were also purchased for the local police stations of the borough so that recovered property could be checked for forensic marking.
"The publicity generated by the forensic marking combined with street signage, window stickers and posters proved a huge deterrent to criminals and helped reassure the public," Kevin went on to say. "The BSIA member provided us with superb service throughout. They are excellent people to deal with and we wouldn't hesitate in recommending them to anyone looking to tackle acquisitive crime."
