Key switch solutions – Guys and St Thomas’ hospital

One BSIA member worked with the Jackson Lift Group, who are now the UK’s largest independent lift, escalator and cradle maintenance organisation to supply key switches to Guys and St Thomas’ hospitals in London, aiding essential movement of critical patients around the hospital.

The Guys Hospital tower stands at 143 meters, making it one of the tallest hospital buildings in the world. Providing services for the residents of Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham with approximately 750,000 patient contacts a year means that there are occasions when a patients condition may be critical and time is of the essence to move a patient to the right part of the hospital for medical assistance.

Outside each lift on each floor, one of the BSIA members’ key switch is positioned meaning that if a crash team, doctor or surgeon needs to transfer a patient requiring urgent medical treatment to the relevant theatre or ward, they will have a key to operate the key switches. Once the key is turned in the switch the lift will ignore all other requests made by the normal push buttons and prioritise the floor with the key switch, going immediately to them until the key is removed.

The BSIA member will soon be re-launching a range of key switches suitable for all industrial environments and specified to work within a broad spectrum of circumstances.
