Control and monitoring system – Bristol International Airport

Bristol International Airport worked with a BSIA member to provide a complete security control and monitoring system for the airport that had to meet the new Department for Transport MATRA requirements for airport security.

Bristol International Airport is the South West’s largest airport and the second fastest growing airport in the UK with 4.6 million passengers passing through its doors in 2007. Security measures have always been in place, however, recent terrorist activities have resulted in a need for an even more thorough approach.

The chosen design at Bristol IA is based on a multiple PC network controlling the terminal building, air traffic control and pass office and utilises the fully built-in photographic ID system providing the ability to maintain the integrity of the restricted zone and prevent unauthorised access to prohibited areas. Around a hundred doors, barriers and access control points are controlled using infrared readers. The software allows unlimited key holders, multiple user groups and schedules, built-in badge design and creation while importantly maintaining a simple but intuitive administration procedure.

“The solution provided has not only proved to be reliable but importantly provides all the security functions that we require,” says Phil Holder, Operational Facilities Manager at Bristol IA. “Technical advice and back up are always available and provided as required.”
