Forensic marking deters metal theft
One BSIA member worked with the London Borough of Greenwich, to crackdown on the theft of valuable metals from businesses and public buildings in the borough.
Following a recent spate of metal thefts from schools, churches, council buildings and local businesses, the council teamed up with both the local police and the BSIA member to launch a campaign which targeted thieves and companies who profit from stolen materials such as lead roofs, copper phone cables, iron manhole covers, road signs and metal from catalytic converters from cars.
Targeted and vulnerable metals were treated with a forensic marking solution which carries a unique DNA code that be traced on stolen metals as well as clothing and the hands of anyone who comes into contact with it.
The Council also has plans to mark historical buildings, including The Royal Observatory and Charlton House. Warning signs about the chemical marking being in place will also be displayed. The Council has also implemented a registration scheme for scrap metal dealers and motor salvage yards.
Councillor Maureen O’Mara, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, comments: “We hope the registration scheme and the DNA solution marking will help is keep a closer track of materials and the dealers that handle them.”Click here to find a property marking company who can offer forensic solutions.
