London bombings

The importance of CCTV images was demonstrated both for 7/7, where images of the perpetrators were obtained from Luton railway station, and for the aborted attack on 21/7, where the police were able to rapidly issue images of the alleged culprits captured on buses, tube trains and stations.

With regard to the events of 21/7, the convictions of four men - recently found guilty of conspiracy to murder - were assisted by nearly 28,000 CCTV recordings gathered by police which was then whittled down to seven hours of footage on buses, trains and stations and then put forward as evidence.

During both incidents, police were able to utilize London's extensive network of congestion charging cameras. ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) systems have proved to be especially beneficial, enabling the police to piece together the movement of vehicles in the lead-up to the incidents.
