Property marking product reduces burglary by 84%
One BSIA member’s product is being used by a leading housing association to combat a spate of thefts from empty homes.
Due to the high cost of metals, particularly copper, and the current credit crunch this has led to an increase in thefts. Consequently, Pennine Housing 2000 is applying the property marking product to boilers and copper piping in empty properties in the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire. The solution contains a unique DNA code that provides a link between thieves and a crime scene to protect boilers and heating pipes in selected empty properties. The solution is only visible by a UV lamp.
As well as protecting empty homes, tenants concerned about rising crime rates commented that it gave them piece of mind. Within six months of using the BSIA member’s system, the burglary figures had reduced by 84%.
