Oxfordshire schools work with BSIA member to mark property

Every primary and secondary school in Oxfordshire is protecting their new computer and electronic equipment with a BSIA member’s property marking kit.

Property marking is part of a wide-reaching crime prevention initiative introduced by Oxfordshire County Council. All 300 schools in the county have been sent the property marking kits to protect items such as laptops, PCs and interactive whiteboards.

The kit contains a bottle of DNA solution that can be easily applied to any item of value. The DNA code links each item to the individual school and does not damage the marked property.

As well as the actual marking of the items, stickers have been issued to the schools to place in their windows and doors, which warn thieves that items are marked. High visibility deterrent signs can also be supplied that can be attached to school gates and exterior walls.

Stephen Foster, Insurance Officer at Oxfordshire County Council, said that the scheme has been very well received. “Several schools have come back to us saying that they have been marking so many items that they have already used their kits up and they want more!”
