British Crime Survey shows that home security measures work

"The British Crime Survey 2004/5 contains considerable evidence of the effectiveness of security measures in the home.

Security was shown to be the most significant determining factor in whether a household experiences a burglary or not. Households with no security have been shown to be far more likely to become victims.

Households where an attempt at burglary had failed were more likely to have a burglar alarm, double/dead locks, window locks or use security lighting.

The report shows that 30% of homeowners now own a burglar alarm.

BSIA chief executive David Dickinson comments: 'This report illustrates the important role that security can play in reducing the risk of being a victim of crime. The majority of home security measures are common sense and low cost, and can result in reduced insurance premiums.

'Advice on security is available from independent sources such as the Police and trade associations like the BSIA. Quality security companies will provide no obligation quotes and we would advise people to get at least three quotes before deciding on the contractor. But beware that the lowest quote isn't necessarily the best investment. Look out for quality marks that demonstrate commitment to standards. All BSIA members meet strict criteria when joining the Association.'
