It was congratulations all round for the team from Border Safeguard recently, as the company was presented with a Highly Commended award for their work in supporting the young workforce at the 2018 Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards.
In his acceptance speech, Managing Director, Alan Wheelans, noted the challenges faced by the security sector in recruiting and retaining a highly skilled workforce. Commenting on the unique nature of the business, and the degree of specialisation required by the engineers, Alan said “We are now a third-generation family business due to celebrate our 40th anniversary in 2019. We are a close-knit team of twenty with 25% of our staff under the age of 25. Over the past 40 years, we have learned the most effective means to ensuring business growth is working with young professionals, teaching them everything they need to know to become highly experienced engineers.”
Lead Judge for the Awards, Edmund Johnston, said: “The judges were impressed with Border Safeguard’s entry and felt that they should be given a special Highly Commended award.”
Border Safeguard remains committed to supporting the young workforce across the business with 4 members of the team currently undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship.
Alan closed by saying: “Working with the young people of the Scottish Borders is a privilege. They always bring something to the table and, as innovation continues to create change in how we deliver the best solution for our customers, it is a positive that we can all learn from one another.
