Virgin Media O2 to Accelerate 3G Switch-Off in Scotland

Thursday 02 October 2025 - BSIA Comms

The UK’s mobile landscape is undergoing a major transformation. As mobile providers phase out 3G networks to make way for faster 4G and 5G services, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) is actively working to support its members through this critical transition. Virgin Media O2 have announced that they will finalise phasing out 3G networks in  Scotland in November 2025 with most remaining parts of the UK having been switched off this week.

Why is Virgin Media O2 switching off 3G?

Mobile operators including Vodafone, EE, Three, and O2 are retiring their 3G networks by the end of 2025. This move is part of a broader strategy to modernise the UK’s digital infrastructure and improve mobile connectivity. However, the shift poses significant challenges for the security industry, where many systems still rely on 3G for alarm signalling and remote monitoring.

What does this mean for the security sector?

The BSIA has highlighted that the 3G switch-off affects more than just mobile phones. Critical systems may all be impacted if they rely on 3G connectivity, such as:

  • Intruder and fire alarms
  • Telecare and personal safety devices
  • CCTV and access control systems
  • ATMs and payment terminals

What should the security sector do?

There are a few steps to ensure that you are prepared for the 3G switch-off.

  • Audit your systems to identify any devices still on 3G.
  • Engage with suppliers to ensure your systems are compatible with 4G or 5G.
  • Plan for migration to upgrade or replace legacy equipment.
  • Educate clients about risks and solutions.

The 3G switch-off is not just a technical upgrade, it’s a call to action for the UK’s security industry. BSIA is committed to ensuring its members are not only prepared but positioned to thrive in a fully digital future.
