When an automatic door, security shutter, gate or barrier stops working, the immediate concern is usually straightforward: how quickly can it be fixed?
But the real impact of a failure can extend much further than the cost of an engineer’s visit.
For businesses and organisations, entrance and security systems are often critical to everyday operations. A failed door can disrupt the movement of staff and visitors. A faulty shutter can affect deliveries or prevent a premises from being secured. A problem with a gate or barrier can restrict vehicle access and create operational headaches.
In some circumstances, a failure can also create safety or security concerns.
That is why planned preventative maintenance should be considered an operational necessity rather than simply another cost on the facilities management budget.
“People often look at servicing in terms of the cost of the maintenance contract,” says Mike Smith, Operations Director of All Round Security. “But the more useful question is what a failure could cost the business. Lost time, disruption, emergency repairs and the knock-on effects of an asset being unavailable can quickly add up.”
Prevention is better than reaction
Reactive maintenance will always have a role. Equipment can fail unexpectedly, accidents happen and components can reach the end of their working life.
However, relying exclusively on reactive repairs means organisations are effectively waiting for something to go wrong before taking action.
Planned preventative maintenance provides a different approach.
Regular inspections give engineers an opportunity to identify wear, deterioration and developing faults before they become failures. They can also provide customers with a clearer picture of the condition of their assets and any remedial work that may be required.
For businesses managing multiple sites or a large number of entrance and security systems, this proactive approach can also make budgeting and forward planning considerably easier.
